A Shape-Shifter is basically a human who has the ability to turn into an animal. NOTE: A Shifter who shifts into a wolf is NOT the same thing as a werewolf.
A Shifter can shift anytime it wants, and is under no moonspell, so does not 'have' to shift at that time.
The true origins of Shifters are unknown, but they are born, not made. Being scratched or bitten by a Shifter won't turn you into one.
Shifters retain both their human and animal senses regardless of which form they are in. Likewise any knowledge gained while in one form is retained once they shift.
While Shifters cannot 'talk' while in their animal form, they can communicate telepathically with those who are telepathic. However, they can telepathically communicate with animals in either form.
Shifters are immortal in that they do not age, or die from disease. They can be killed however, silver bullet does the trick quite nicely, as does beheading, and burning to ashes.
A Shifter remains in whatever form he dies in. The legend got started because many use their last bit of stregnth to shift back into their human forms so that their loved ones could know what happened to them.
